San Francisco Event Venues

The Commonwealth Club

I’m a San Francisco corporate event photographer with hands on experience shooting professional conferences and membership events at the Commonwealth Club, one of San Francisco’s most storied civic venues.

I served as the lead photographer for the 2025 IABA National Summit Annual Conference, a milestone event hosted by the Iranian American Bar Association marking its 25th anniversary. With three additional Commonwealth Club events already on the 2026 calendar, I’m building a track record at this venue that gives clients immediate confidence and seamless coverage.

Whether you’re planning a professional conference, panel series, membership luncheon, awards program, or nonprofit summit at the Commonwealth Club, I bring venue-specific experience, fast delivery, and a proven approach to capturing the moments that matter most.

What makes the Commonwealth Club unique for corporate events?

The Commonwealth Club of California is one of San Francisco’s oldest and most respected civic institutions. Founded in 1903, it’s located at 110 The Embarcadero with sweeping waterfront views. The venue offers a range of distinct spaces. These include intimate breakout rooms, panel halls, and a main auditorium. Over the years, this auditorium has hosted presidents, Nobel laureates, and leading voices in policy, business, and culture.

For professional associations, nonprofits, legal organizations, and civic groups, the Commonwealth Club carries unmatched credibility in San Francisco. Events here tend to be serious and substantive. The photography needs to match.

From a photography standpoint, the Commonwealth Club’s indoor spaces offer varied lighting environments. Panel rooms feature warm, event-focused lighting, ideal for speaker shots and audience candids. The venue’s multi-room layout matters most when concurrent sessions run. It rewards a photographer with a clear coverage plan who can move efficiently between spaces without missing key moments.

STAT News — 2026 Breakthrough Summit

STAT News The Commonwealth Club May 2026

Jack Simpson Photography covered the STAT 2026 Breakthrough Summit, a health and life-sciences program bringing together clinicians, researchers, executives, and journalists across a full day of stage sessions and networking.

The summit made use of nearly every space in the building: registration and arrivals in the ground-floor lobby, main-stage panels and fireside chats in the auditorium, media interviews recorded on site, and a happy hour reception on the rooftop terrace with the Bay Bridge and Ferry Building in the background. That spread is exactly the multi-space rotation this venue demands.

  • Guest arrivals, registration, and branded environment detail
  • Speaker panels and main-stage session documentation
  • Fireside chat discussions and on-site media interviews
  • Candid networking moments throughout the day
  • Happy hour rooftop reception with city skyline backdrop

Iranian American Bar Association

On November 15, 2025, IABA held its 2025 National Summit Annual Conference at the Commonwealth Club, marking the organization’s 25th anniversary. I served as lead photographer for a full day of panel discussions across multiple rooms for approximately 110 guests, delivering 450+ fully edited photographs within one business day.

Art of Procurement

On May 5, 2026, Art of Procurement held Catalyst | San Francisco at the Commonwealth Club, an invite-only, single-day working session for senior procurement and supply chain executives on operating models in the age of AI. The format was intentionally small: capped at roughly 80 practitioners, with small-group roundtables and facilitator-led “mastermind” sessions rather than a stage-and-audience conference, closing with an evening networking reception.

UCLA Anderson Fink Center for Finance

I photographed a San Francisco stop of UCLA Anderson’s Fink Center for Finance Alumni Network, a multicity series connecting Fink Center alumni, students, faculty, and the broader investment community for conversation and networking. Coverage focused on the program and the reception that followed.

What should an event photographer know about the Commonwealth Club?

The Commonwealth Club rewards preparation. Its spaces are professional and well-managed. Events held there typically run on a tight schedule. A photographer needs a clear coverage plan and the ability to anticipate and move efficiently throughout the day.

Panel and speaker documentation

The Commonwealth Club hosts a high proportion of panel-format events. Most of the photography centers on speaker documentation: capturing speakers in a way that is crisp, well-lit, and conveys authority and engagement. Getting the right angles, working with the available stage lighting, and capturing the natural interaction between panelists and moderators is central to successful conference photography at this venue.

My approach: I work from the event agenda before the day begins, identifying each panel’s location and format. I position for clean speaker angles early in each session, then shift to audience reaction shots, candid moment captures, and room-wide establishing shots. At the IABA Summit, the final session block featured two concurrent panels in separate rooms. I rotated between both over the 60-minute block to ensure both sessions were fully documented.

Multi-room conference coverage

When a conference runs multiple tracks or concurrent sessions across different rooms, photography coverage requires a deliberate rotation strategy. A photographer who shows up and wings it will miss sessions. A photographer who has a plan captures everything.

My approach: I map out the day’s room assignments in advance and build a priority list based on what the client values most: keynotes, award moments, specific speakers, and high-profile attendees. Flexible moments like general networking and ambient room shots fill the gaps. At the IABA Summit, I used ribbon identifiers on attendee name badges to quickly identify speakers, Guests of Honor, and other high-priority subjects in a room full of 100-plus attendees.

Membership and professional association events

Events at the Commonwealth Club are often organized by professional associations and membership organizations. Here, every attendee is both a guest and a stakeholder. The photography priority is different from a corporate conference or brand activation. Attendees want to see themselves in the photos, so coverage needs to be comprehensive, not just focused on the stage.

My approach: For membership events, I treat the entire room as the story, not just the speakers. I move through the crowd during networking windows, capture conversations and candid moments, and make a deliberate effort to photograph as broad a cross-section of attendees as possible. For the IABA Summit, the client specifically requested 450+ images to give every attendee a reasonable chance of appearing in the gallery.
